The Causes of Toenail Fungus

Although nail fungus (Onychomycosis) is a fungal condition commonly found on toenails, they occasionally occur on the finger nails too. The condition when present, may affect one or several of the toenails or fingernails.

About 10% of the adult population will at some points in their lives experience it. This makes the most common nail abnormalities in an average adult today. Treatments of the Onychomycosis is based on signs and symptoms exhibited or parts of the nail affected. Medications such as terbinafine are usually administered to stop the spread and provide the eventual cure if the dosage is completed accordingly.

The Causes

DermatophytesToenail fungus is mostly caused by a special kind of fungi called Dermatophytes. They thrive commonly in temperate regions such as the majority of the western countries. Other sources of toenail fungus could be yeast (Candida) and nondermatophytic molds which tend to thrive in tropic and subtropic conditions that are characterized by a hot and humid climate.

Microscopic organisms such as fungi thrive in environments that are warm, humid and devoid of sunlight. This is the reason why Onychomycosis is commonly found on toenails that are usually enclosed in shoes and exposed to the warm and sweaty environment when microscopic organism thrive the most.

Also, blood flow to the toes is lesser when compared to the rest of the body, hence, there is a reduced possibility of immune system fighting the fungal infection. Their microscopic nature ensures that they gain easy access to your body through a tiny cut on the skin or a separation between the nail and the nail bed.

Note, however, that Onychomycosis is prevalent in adults above the age of 60. This is as a result of the gradual weakening of their immune system which is evident in the inability of the nail to defend itself against possible fungal infections. Onychomycosis can cause a change in the color of nail, which may be white, brown or even yellow. They get thickened and change shape and noticeably, they hurt a lot.
